Create an accountCreative Spotlight: Kallen Mikel
For the last 13 years, Frances has sourced local artists from around Arizona to create a flyer announcing our biggest holiday event- Crafeteria. Continuing this tradition, an unbelievably talented artist located right here in downtown Phoenix hand painted our 14th annual flyer.
Meet Kallen Mikel Schmerier, the creator of our 2019 Crafeteria flyer. We asked her a few questions about her career, inspirations, and more. Enjoy!
Q&A With Kallen
When did you know you wanted to make art for a living? When did that become a reality for you?
I've known I wanted to be a creative full-time since I was a teenager. I finally decided to take a huge leap and pursue doing art full-time about a year ago.
What inspires you both in life and in your art?
Nature is my biggest inspiration. I am also inspired by moving mediation, music, the relationship with myself, and others. My art is personal but can be interpreted in many different ways and I like that.
What is the medium you use for your art and why?
I mostly use gouache paint right now. I like that it applies very smoothly like water colors but is also opaque and does not need multiple layers.
What does being a creative mean to you?
To me, being a creative just means to create something that comes from within you- to make something that is uniquely yours.
What struggles have you encountered pursuing a creative career?
Growing up, certain people in my family told me art wasn't a real career and that it should just be a hobby. It took 10 years for me to believe I could actually make a living from making my art.
What do you like about Crafeteria?
I love Crafeteria because it helps local artists get their work out there. I think it is a gorgeous event and it is amazing that Frances puts it on every year. It is so perfect that it's right before Christmas too.
What are your favorite local spots around the valley?
Solstice Intimates, Vendura - Plant Based Eatery, Cafe Lalibela, Gather, and Sutra Yoga Studio.
Crafeteria is December 6, 2019 from 6-10pm located in the parking lot of Frances. Enjoy music, food and warm drinks as you shop from amazing local vendors!
